WHY IS MY AIR CONDITIONER BLOWING SMOKE?

WHY IS MY AIR CONDITIONER BLOWING SMOKE?

Have you ever noticed a white smoke blowing out of your AC unit? Did you check whether the AC unit is burnt or if there are any wire circuit shorts? If nothing is wrong, where does this white smoke come from exactly?

Here are two possible reason

  1. The odorless, smoke coming out of your air conditioner is probably excess water stored in the heater box. It is a sign of a restricted drain hole that needs cleaning.
  2. When the cold air hits the warm air, white smoke or fog can develop. If your indoor humidity is higher than normal, this can make the smoke even worse.

How can you make this fog go away?

Try running your system on high for a few minutes, this will help to balance the humidity differential more quickly and the fog should disappear on its own.

When the airflow is reduced, cold can be exposed longer to the moist air, causing a greater problem.

Here is what you should do:

  • Keep the air filters clean at all times
  • Run the A/C Fan on high speed to cool your indoor air a lot faster
  • Schedule a regular AC inspection

If you air conditioner is blowing smoke accompanied by strange smell, you probably have a more serious problem.

Air conditioners are, of course, filled with electrical components and without proper ventilation, these components will overheat and product a burning smell. This problem will result of a severely clogged air filter preventing proper ventilation of the units.

If you notice this issue, you should immediately shut the air conditioner off and call a professional.
